DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nIf you measure success by the number of deployments\, SQLite dominates the\ndatabase world. There are more instances of SQLite running today than all\nother database engines combined. Why is this? How did SQLite come to be\nso widely used? What makes SQLite different?This talk attempts to answer those questions by reviewing the unusual\ndesign and implementation choices in SQLite\, and showing how those\nchoices make SQLite well suited for mobile phones\, appliances\,\napplications\, and the „internet of things“ where SQLite is often found.\nThe talk will delve into SQLite’s use of bytecode\, the techniques used\nto achieve ACID power-safe transactions\, and the query planning\nalgorithms.This talk is targeted toward listeners who are familiar with\nother database implementations\, but it also accessible to people with\nonly a general computer programming background and who just want to\nknow more about how an SQL database engine works behind the scenes. \nShort Bio:\nRichard Hipp is an entrepreneur based in Charlotte\, NC\, USA\, and the founder\nand lead developer for SQLite as well as several other open-source projects.\nHe has been an invited speaker at universities around the world\, including\nMIT\, Harvard\, CMU\, NYU\, IIT Kharagpur\, Politechnika Gdańska\, and others. \nRichard never intended to become a „database guy“. His PhD dissertation\n(Duke University\, 1992) was in computational linguistics\, and his\nundergraduate studies were in electrical engineering and digital signal\nprocessing. DESCRIPTION:Dirk studied electrical and computer engineering at Virginia Tech and TU Braunschweig and in 2002 received a Ph.D. on modeling and design of embedded systems. He held several positions in R&D (software component technology\, scheduling analysis\, software architectures for multi-cores\, autonomous systems design) and product management (embedded software engineering tools). In his current role as chief expert at Bosch Research in Renningen\, Dirk leads a research cluster developing methods and technologies for dynamic distributed systems. The vision of the research cluster is to create a distributed compute continuum from embedded devices to data centers supporting real-time and safety-critical workloads. The talk will outline the technical challenges and solutions paving the way towards this vision.

DESCRIPTION:Daniel studied Computer Science and Business Economics at Saarland University and\, in the year 2000\, received his Ph.D. on code optimization for embedded processors. He is a co-founder of the company AbsInt\, located here at the Science Park. AbsInt provides verification tools for safety- or security-critical embedded systems\, in particular based on abstract interpretation and formal compiler verification. Over the years Daniel gained a lot of insight in the development of control software for cars\, airplanes\, nuclear power plants and medical devices\, and the verification challenges for them. Obviously a malfunctioning of the software in such systems can be dangerous for people\, but formal verification techniques are only slowly being adopted in industry. The talk will touch on safety-critical systems in industry\, self-driving cars\, the acceptable level of risk\, and formal verification methods in practice.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ralf Karrenberg (NVIDIA\, formerly a student at Saarland University)\nAn old joke goes “ray tracing is the technology of the future and always will be”. A few years after the release of the first desktop-class GPU with dedicated ray tracing hardware the games industry has well and truly arrived in that future – also thanks to a significant contribution from AI\, and some foundational compiler technology. We’ll take a look at the role that NVIDIA’s ray tracing driver and its compiler infrastructure play in running today’s games. This will be accompanied by lessons learned and stories from a journey that led from Saarland University to contributing to Hollywood blockbusters in New Zealand to helping prototype and productize the first game-centric ray tracing API (“DirectX Raytracing”).

Sowohl aus Unternehmenssicht interne wie auch externe Aspekte bilden hierbei wesentliche Einflussfaktoren.\nUm Software als Produkt zu entwickeln sind bestimmte Eigenschaften der Lösung essentiell. Eine zentrale Rolle im Software-Produktmanagement spielt die dafür verantwortliche Person – beim Software-Hersteller SAP der „Product-Owner“. Der größte europäische Softwarehersteller SAP SE hat sich deshalb entschieden\, die agile Softwareentwicklung in Form von SCRUM zu nutzen. In diesem Vortrag wird von einem Mitarbeiter der SAP SE dargestellt\, wie dort SCRUM umgesetzt wurde\, wie sich dies ausgewirkt hat und welche Lehren daraus gezogen werden können. Neben der Definition und Beschreibung von SCRUM wird die Umsetzung dabei mit vielen Beispielen aus der Praxis eines IT-Großkonzerns dargestellt werden. Michael Haase beendete 1999 sein Studium der Informatik an der Universität des Saarlandes. In seiner beruflichen Laufbahn blickt er auf 17 Jahre Berufserfahrung in der Software-Entwicklung bei der SAP SE am Standort St. Ingbert zurück. Der Schwerpunkt der Tätigkeiten liegt dabei seit mehr als 10 Jahren auf Projektleitung- und Koordination\, vor allem im Bereich des Produkts SAP Transportation Management.

JX is designed from the ground up around state machine replication\, a classic distributed systems technique. This choice has profound affects on the resulting system\, providing a simple framework for building a reliable platform\, while at the same time requiring very careful performance engineering to make it work effectively. Backed by Switzerlands biggest banks and payment terminal providers\, Paymit was designed to fill this gap. The development of the customer facing reference mobile apps for Android and iOS was completely developed by ti&m\, a swiss IT consulting company.\nI will take you on a journey how Paymit was developed. I will point out some opportunities to work in such an interesting field with quickly changing projects\, developing not only mobile apps. ti&m provides a wide range of jobs in the fields of backend\, frontend\, mobile\, and security development.\nMartin studied computer science (Bachelor and Master) at the Saarland University and finished his studies with Prof. Wilhelm. He started his career as software developer at AbsInt\, a company closely related to Prof. Wilhelms research. There he took also responsibilities in supporting customers in using AbsInts complex tools. He left AbsInt and moved to Switzerland joining ti&m\, an IT consulting company headquartered at Zurich. While developing mainly user interfaces for mobile apps and web applications he got enthusiastic about UX and did further education in Usability at artop – Institut an der Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.
